What is an integration course?

What is an integration course?

The iOR Language Institute is approved as an integration course provider by the BAMF (Federal Office for Migration and Refugees).

Since 2005 we are proud to teach languages in two locations: Freiburg and Lörrach.

Ever since, thousands more students from over 100 countries have successfully completed integration and other language courses at the iOR Language Institute. Successful completion for us means not only passing the required DTZ (German Test for Immigrants) or the B1 level exams, but also integrating into German society, finding their own way in Germany and feeling at home in their new homeland.

For this purpose we have summarized for our future students the most important tips and information that we have gathered during our years of experience in the field of integration courses. We hope this will be helpful for you during your first steps in Germany:

You should learn German if you want to live in Germany.

It is very important in every life situation: looking for a job, dealing with legal documents, supporting your children with their school studies and simply socializing and meeting people. You should also learn a little about Germany's history, culture and legal system.

Content and structure

The integration course comprises 700 hours:

The course ends with the DTZ/B1 exam. The aim of the integration course is to pass this exam.

In the scaled DTZ language examination students can prove their language skills at level A2 or B1 with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). After successfully passing the B1 level exam and the orientation course exam you are entitled to an “Integration course certificate”.

Participation and tuition fees

For integration courses, the German Residence Law stipulates different participation regulations and costs.

Normally, the course is free for ALG II (unemployment pay type II) beneficiaries. In all other cases, the course costs €1.95 per UE (45-minute teaching unit), therefore one module costs €195 for 100 teaching units.

Rights and obligations

When you register for an integration course you also have to take a placement test in order for us to find out which course level is right for you. Upon receiving approval from the BAMF for you to participate in the course, we can confirm the expected start date.

After the enrolment process you are entitled to:

  • Regular lessons
  • A qualified teacher
  • Well-equipped classrooms

You will also be entitled to a certificate of regular attendance.

A fact sheet on the integration course for newly arrived immigrants and existing foreign immigrants who are required to attend can be found in multiple languages here.
